(1562) Gaita, sort of bagpipe. From spanish gaita. However it is possible that the word is common to both languages already in older time. It is known all around the Méditerranée, even in arabic. Probably from *gait- "goat" (the bag is done with the skin of a goat). Cf. proto-germanic *gaitaz "goat". In the french Limousin the bagpipe is called "chabrette", from chabra "goat".

De *gait- "cabra" (piel de la cabra), cf. proto-germánico *gaitaz "cabra". Arabe gaita también. En Limousin la gaita se llama "chabrette", de chabra "cabra".

Il est connu dans tout le Bassin Méditerranéen, y-compris en arabe. De *gait- "chèvre" (peau de chèvre qui forme le sac de la cornemuse), cf. proto-germanique *gaitaz "chèvre". En Limousin on appelle la cornemuse "chabrette", de chabra "chèvre".
