terre - Dictionnaire étymologique basque-français-espagnol-anglais
angelu
(1025) Terre basse, sol. Du latin angellu, diminutif de angulu "angle".
(1025) Tierra baja, suelo. Del latín angellu, diminutivo de angulu "ángulo".
(1025) Lowland, ground. From latin angellu, diminutive of angulu "angle".

aran
(828) Vallée. De la vieille racine pré-latine *ar-. Cf.
(828) Valle. De la vieja raíz pre-latina *ar-. Cf. Cf. también Arance (Landes), Arn (Tarn), Arne (Marne) segùn E. Nègre, 1990, I, n°1021, p.28, Arante (Pyr.-Atl.), Arani (Asturias). Finés aro "valle"?
(828) Valley. From the old pre-latin root *ar-. Cf. Val d’Aran in Catalonia, Val d’Aran in France (Bouches-du-Rhône, Var) and in the sardinian toponymy (Aranake, Aranzu, etc.). In the german toponymy there is a form *arn-: Erft de * Arnefa < *Arn-apa, Ernz in Luxemburg, Ernzen < *Arantia near Bitburg (Eifel), Arnebrunn, Arnbach, Arnach, etc. Th. Vennemann (Introd., XIX/XV) mentions also Arundel in England and Arendal in Norway that would be tautologies like Val d’Aran. Cf. also Arance (Landes), Arn (Tarn), Arne (Marne) according to E. Nègre, 1990, I, n°1021, p.28, Arante (Pyr.-Atl.), Arani (Asturies). Finnish aro "valley".

(1564) Enterrado. Cruce de ohore "honor" y ortz "cielo".
(1564) Buried. Crossing of ohore "honour" and ortz "sky".

elur
(prehistory) Snow. Cognate with its doblet lur "earth" and perhaps with nivkh (ghiliak) lur "ice". Cp. chechen luo "snow"?? Even if the chechen word is not cognate with the basque one, the semantic link between chechen luo "snow" and lea-(tta) "earth" is the same as in basque. This shows that in some cold places the earth, the ground and the snow were often confounded. Those who, like J.D. Bengtson, think that the two basque words lur and elur are only chance resemblance are obviously wrong. The same style of prehistoric doublet come again with ezur "bone" and zur "wood". Var. edur. See also lur.

ibar
Valley, dale. From *ib-. Cp. also with the river Ibar in Serbia and Montenegro. It seems that there are also Bar in the sardinian toponymy. In Germany Iba near Rotenburg an der Fulda, Ibra near Bad Hersfeld. Theo Vennemann thinks, like me, that the german names with Eber cannot always mean "wildboar". It is clear that names like Ibrach or Ebrach are coming from a root *ib- ou *eb- "water" (but cf. Eberbach where Eber "wildboar" is not excluded). However he forgets that this does not fit to Evreux (from the gaulish tribe Eburovices) or Ebreuil, Evry etc., all coming from gaulish eburo "yew". Cf. also Ibisa in 979 > Ybbs a tributary of the Danube, Ibenbach a tributary of the Dreisam in Baden-Württemberg. In England Ivel.

lur
(prehistory) Earth. Cognate with elur "snow" and perhaps with nivkh (ghiliak) lur "ice". Cp. chechen luo "snow", ingush loa "id."? The double form lur/elur is an argument for the great oldness of the Basques and their language, the earth and the snow being the same thing in a time of very cold weather. Some people, like E. Blasco-Ferrer, let come lur from a protobasque form *dur. There is a form tur "earth" in altaic and perhaps DUR in sumerian.
