Very interesting, I was feeling the same thing for difference between French in Canada and France.
There is still a lot of difference, but more and more expressions from the country of influence tend to get adopted in the other one.
Of course TV and movies have been playing a big role in that, but I think Internet is making a big revolution as people from everywhere in the world just began chatting and influencing each other.
When you're watching a movie, the influence is no so direct, because you are not involved in a conversation.

In response to some of the postings above, I would not deduce that simply by virtue of the fact that one encounters more US-American spelling on-line, this automatically makes it "correct". England, after all, is the mother country of Modern English. In Canada, British spelling is commonly used (centre, tyre, etc.) whereas if you listen to a Canadian speak, it is much more resembling the language of a US-American.
In one of the above postings, somebody lists wheat/corn as being two usages on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact, Europeans use the word maize whereas Americans would use the term corn. |
