While watching a millionth movie in english, I heard a strange expression with "the hell". It sounded like this : "The Hell with the law!" and the character who said that had just been told that he couldn't do what he wanted because of the law. Knowing what "the hell" means, I'd say that this expression means "Je m'en fous de la loi!" (sorry for the vulgarity) or "i don't care about the law" for those who don't speak french. Am I right? And I often heard this one too : "i don't give a damn/a shit (about? of?)" is it well written?
Thanks |

I think the best translation for the hell with law would be au diable la loi. |

Hello Mae,
I agree with Maisse Arsouye's translation (although "The hell with the law" would be better).
Citation: | I don't give a damn/a shit (about? of?) |
There's another expression quite similar to these, although it's ruder, it's "I don't give a f***"
In any case we say "I don't give a damn about it" and not "of it"
EX:
Jannie will get mad at you if you don't go to her birthday party !
I don't give a damn about her, I won't go there !
Have a nice day

Tu veux dire "what the heck" (fam.), forme plus expressive que "what".

What he is doing ? -> What the heck is is doing ?

What's the heck ..."
etymonline.com a écrit: | heck
euphemistic alteration of hell, first recorded 1865. |
- Je me suis toujours demandé si heck et l'all.

Ok Ok merci beaucoup. Mais quand on dit "what the hell are you doing here" par exemple, c'est vulgaire ou seulement familier? Vous pourriez me faire un petit classement ? |

À mon avis :
What are you doing here? poli (Qu'est-ce que vous faites ici ?)
What the heck are you doing here ? familier (Qu'est-ce que vous foutez ici ?)
What the hell are you doing here ? vulgaire (Qu'est-ce que vous foutez ici, nom de Dieu ?)
What the fuck are you doing here ? très vulgaire (Qu'est-ce que vous foutez ici, b* de m* de fils de p* ?) |

J'ajouterais juste que "What the hell are you doing here?" peut s'utiliser entre amis.
