Hello eh oui c'est encore moi vous risquez de me voir très souvent dans les parages parce que j'ai toujours une tonne de questions à poser surtout en anglais ^^. Mon problème est le suivant :
je n'arrive pas très bien à faire la différence entre another, other et else. En fait, si je veux dire : il y a d'autres choses ==> There are some other things ? There are else things ? (berk ca sonne horriblement faux) Derrière un "another", on ne met qu'un singulier c'est bien ca ? Et else ? quand est-ce qu'on l'emploie ?
Thanks to all |

another is used with singular nouns and other with plural nouns or singular with the definite article. Both of them preceed the noun:
- another book - the other book - other books
else is used with (always goes after them):
a) indefinite pronouns: something, anything, nothing, somebody, anybody, nobody...:
- do you want anything else?
- I saw someone else
b) interrogative pronouns: who, what, where...:
- Who else came to the party?
- Where else can we go? |

Yes. You'll never say "I want to read an "else book". You'll say "I want to read another book".
So yes. I guess "else" is only used in these two cases. |

[quote="Castells"]another is used with singular nouns and other with plural nouns or singular with the definite article. Both of them preceed the noun:

Another+ singulier= un(e) autre 'another cup of tea'
Another + pluriel = encore ou de plus 'another three customers'
other/ the other/ the others = l'autre/les autres
'where is the other waiter?'
'have you seen the others?'
Note: other (adj) ne prend jamais d's
other (pronom) prend s au pluriel |

In this case, it's important to point out that the noun must be always quantified with a number or an expression that indicates an amount. Otherwise it's impossible.
We can say another three customers as in your exemple, but we can't say another customers or another good customers.
I would call it another+amount rather than another+plural...

We were speaking about adjectives...
the others - plural definite pronoun / others - plural indefinite pronoun (Edited by myself after Leo's observation)

Just to nitpick, others can stand by itself, or go after many, etc:
Some went away, others stayed.
Many others didn't agree. |
