Muchas hipótesis fueron emitidas a propósito de esta palabra: lat. bonu(m) pero también una relación con las formas aquitanas Bon-, -ponnis (cf. L. Michelena, FHV, 253;TAV, 17). Las var. con h hon, hun no resuelven nada dado que la h de los dialectos del norte no es siempre etimológica. Cf. también turco on, ong "bueno", estonio onn "id.".
