(1745) Mil, millet (Bot.). De arto "maïs" et txiki "petit". Autrefois le basque arto désignait le millet, mais après l’introduction du maïs en Europe il a désigné ce dernier et il a fallu créer un nouveau terme pour le millet. On dit aussi artoxehe.
