narb
(aquitanian, Domu Narb, inscription found in Sagonte). Word disappeared from nowadays basque, of uncertain meaning though very well attested: Narbaitz (Alava, 1060, narbeiza), Narbarte, Narp (Béarn, Landes), etc. It might be derivated from the pre-indoeuropean stem *nar- "water" but it is not sure. The hypothesis of a borrowing from latin malva "mallow" (Bot.) is not good because *narb is a very old basco-iberian word. Perhaps "well, lake, marsh, lagoon or stream, wet place"(cf. The Narva, a river of Estonia issued from the Peïpous lake, the Narew/Narwo a tributary of the Vistule in north-eastern Poland and the inupik narva "lake, lagoon" (Fortescue, Comparative eskimo dictionary, 214). The form narb- was also known by the Iberians and Ligurians, wherefrom the name of the city Narbonne in the south of France (the Colonia Narbo Martius of the Romains in 118 B.C.). There is also Narbe in Esquiule and the family name Narbeburu. The basque village Arbonne (Labourd) was before Narbona in 1188. There was probably a variant *nerb- / nerv- (cf. Nervion) and perhaps *norb- (Norba (Latium). One will notice that there is a place Narp near Biscarrosse (Landes). In the department Gironde B. Boyrie-Fénié gives a stem with similar typologic formation -b > -p *barb- > barp (Le Barp) with the hydonymic meaning "marsh". A. Dolgopolsky (Nostratic Dictionary) reconstructed a nostratic root *naRU- "marsh, swamp".
