Allières, Les Basques, 104, thought that these sandals were made before with bark and that the name might be derived from abar "little branch" ? The word is common with spanish and probably pre-roman.

Big wooden container where one curds the milk. If the word is not derived from aba, abar "wood, branch" with the collective suff. of the vegetals -tz (cp. abatz) one could consider a crossing with the eurasian stem *gab- "hollow" (cp. abu "mortar"). A var. of abats has the meaning "hub of the wheel" which is not against this latter etymology (cp. sp. "cubo de la rueda").

Si la palabra no esta derivada de abe, abar "madera, rama" con suf. colectivo de los vegetales (cp. abatz) se podría considerar un cruce con la raíz eurasiana *gab- "hueco" (cp. abu "mortero, almirez"). Una var. de abats tiene el sentido de "cubo de la rueda".
Grand récipient en bois où se caille le lait. Si le terme n’est pas dérivé de abe, abar "bois, branche" avec suff. collectif des végétaux -tz (cf. abatz) on pourrait envisager un croisement avec la racine eurasienne *gab- "creux" (cp. abu "mortier"). Une var. de abats a en effet le sens de "moyeu de la roue" qui ne s’oppose pas à cette dernière étymologie (cp. esp. "cubo de la rueda").
